Can Anything Good Come From…Elkhart?

Posted on 12. Feb, 2015 by Tim Bushong in News

No offense to my friends who live there, but we used to dread driving from here in Syracuse to where our singer, Dave Loren, lived in Berrien Springs, Michigan, because it meant that we had to make the trip through…Elkhart! Aaaagh…nowadays, county road 17 just shoots straight up through everything (love it!), but back then it was the winding streets and getting around the Elkhart river that gave us so much grief. But I digress…

Nathan Overbey is a young singer/songwriter from Elkhart with whom I started working in September of 2014, and he’s gone from merely demoing out a few songs to recording a full-length CD project. That’s usually what happens—someone comes in to record here, maybe on the recommendation of a friend, and they get hooked. “First taste is free”, says the dealer… (o:

Nathan sings, plays guitar, and has also worked in some Melodion into the mix! This instrument really adds an organic touch to things.

I have been adding my own touches to the songs, playing drums, bass, organ, some guitar, and using MIDI to write any piano or strings parts.

But it’s all about the songs with Nathan. Drawing from his own experiences he weaves some pretty interesting and poignant lyrics.

We typically record a scratch vocal and guitar with a click track to get the basic arrangement, then we dive in and flesh the song out. He usually has a pretty good conceptual idea of where he wants to go with his music, but of course I add my two cents as well.

Below, I’ve posted a couple tastes of what will no doubt be a really listenable and (and slightly enigmatic) project.

Lonely Throne Sample

I’ll update as we get close to a finished CD.

Can’t wait…

So went to visit Napanee for fall break. Loved the Antique Store Merchants, Jewelers, The Amish Mall, Amish Groceries, the awesome Coffee House, and Rocket Science Ice Cream-a diaenfte MUST HAVE Experience!Veni’s was a real disappointment-at $19.95 a pound for chocolate, the chocolate should be fresh and Turtle’s should have a diaenfte carmel center-neither of which we found to be true. (We have checked out the chocolate shops from Jacksonville Florida, to South Bend Indiana, to Fort Wayne Indiana, through Kokomo Indiana, and several more)This had to be the most disappointing stop of the day. Note to others-be sure to taste a sample before you purchase. This is a qaunt little town with many wonderful merchants.
